App Academy built its name on a selective, full-time immersive in San Francisco and New York that cost nothing until you were hired. That program no longer exists. Today, App Academy sells part-time, online “AI” programs, run in partnership with Coding Temple, for $4,000 upfront. This review covers App Academy as it is today: what it costs, how you get in, what you’ll learn, and who it’s right for.

What’s changed at App Academy
Most App Academy reviews online describe a school that no longer exists. These are the changes that matter:
- The full-time, in-person immersive is gone. Every program is now part-time and online.
- “Free until you’re hired” is gone. The old deferred model, where you paid a share of your salary only after landing a job, has been replaced by a standard price, an installment plan, and a deferred loan through Edly.
- It’s no longer just software engineering. App Academy now offers data analytics, quality assurance, and cybersecurity tracks, all branded “AI”.
- Coding Temple runs the programs. App Academy partnered with Coding Temple, another online bootcamp, which now handles admissions, teaching, and career support.
- Getting in is no longer the hard part. App Academy was famous for rejecting most applicants. Admissions is now an application, a call, and an assessment, with no prior coding required.

How much does App Academy cost?
Every program has the same list price: $10,000. What you actually pay depends on how you pay.
| Option | What you pay | Terms |
|---|---|---|
| Pay upfront | $4,000 | A $6,000 discount, labeled a limited-time offer. No credit check. Also unlocks scholarships. |
| Monthly installments | From $155/month for 48 months | $0 deposit; credit check required. 48 × $155 is $7,440, so ask for your total before you sign. |
| Deferred tuition (Edly) | $8,500 tuition, plus interest | Nothing during the course. After you graduate, payments are based on your income and recalculated yearly. You can pause if you earn below a threshold, but interest keeps accruing. Credit-based approval. |

The math is simple: if you can pay $4,000 upfront, do it. Deferring costs you at least $4,500 more, plus interest, for the same program. App Academy also advertises more than $10,000 in scholarships each quarter for qualified applicants.
For comparison, Hack Reactor’s full-time program costs $16,980 after its Merit Scholarship. Want to know how long a bootcamp takes to pay for itself? Run your numbers through the bootcamp break-even calculator.
How to get into App Academy
- Take the quiz and book a call. The site starts with a short quiz, then a 15-minute call with admissions.
- Apply. The application takes about five minutes.
- Complete the assessment. App Academy says it checks for “aptitude to succeed”; you don’t need to know how to code.
- Get a decision within two business days, choose how to pay, and secure your start date.

You must be at least 18. Before the first module, you complete pre-work covering logical and critical thinking, computer literacy and the terminal, and Python fundamentals.
What you’ll learn: the AI Software Engineering curriculum
The software engineering track is four months, Python-based, and focused on building AI-powered back ends:
- AI Foundations
- Advanced Python & Data Handling
- Databases & SQL
- REST API Fundamentals
- FastAPI Development
- Web Essentials & Streamlit
- Applied AI: Embeddings & Retrieval
- RAG & Docker Deployment
- Capstone: your own AI-powered application

After graduating, you join an 8-week Tech Residency: live team projects where you ship a product, which gives you real collaborative work to show employers.
Notice what’s missing: there’s no front-end framework module. Streamlit gets you a working interface quickly, but you won’t build a React front end the way older App Academy and Hack Reactor students did. If you want full-stack web development, that’s a real gap.
Career support and outcomes
Career services include résumé and LinkedIn help, mock technical and behavioral interviews, weekly workshops, 1:1 mentoring, and an alumni community, with no expiration date.
On outcomes, be clear-eyed. App Academy says more than 4,500 graduates have been hired at over 2,000 companies, but its most recent placement and salary figures are from 2019 and describe the old full-time campus program: 93–95% placement and average first-year salaries of $86,900 (New York) and $104,000 (San Francisco). There is no published data for the current part-time programs, and App Academy states plainly that it does not guarantee job placement.
What it does offer is Tuition Protection: meet every program requirement and don’t land qualifying work within nine months of graduating, and you may be eligible for tuition relief or a refund. Get the written terms before you pay.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| $4,000 upfront is among the lowest prices for a live, instructor-led bootcamp | No published outcomes for the current programs |
| Part-time and online, so you can keep your job | No front-end framework in the software track |
| Curriculum built around AI tools employers are hiring for (RAG, embeddings, FastAPI) | Four months is short; expect to keep learning after you graduate |
| 8-week residency adds team experience | Low admissions bar means classmates of every level |
| Career services never expire | Deferred and installment options cost much more than paying upfront |
From Michael, Hack Reactor ’16: App Academy and Hack Reactor were the two names every serious applicant compared, and both have walked away from the selective, full-time model that made them famous. App Academy’s new version is a different product: a low-cost, part-time introduction to building AI applications in Python. At $4,000, it’s a reasonable way to find out whether you want this career. Just don’t mistake it for the old App Academy. Four months part-time won’t make you job-ready on its own, and with no current outcomes data, you’re betting on yourself, not on the school’s track record.
Who should choose App Academy?
- Good fit: you’re working full-time, want structure and live instruction, can pay $4,000 upfront, and are drawn to AI and back-end work in Python.
- Look elsewhere: you want a full-time immersive, a full-stack JavaScript and React curriculum, or a school with recent, audited outcomes data.
- Not sure yet? Start with App Academy Open, the free, self-paced version of the curriculum, before paying anything.
Alternatives to App Academy

- Hack Reactor: full-time (16 weeks) or part-time (30 weeks), live online, $16,980 after its Merit Scholarship. Longer and more expensive, with a broader curriculum.
- Coding Temple: the company that runs App Academy’s programs also sells its own self-paced tracks.
- Free first: App Academy Open and other free curricula let you test your interest before spending money.
